Cage-Free Indonesia

A movement to raise public awareness about the welfare of farmed animals, especially egg-laying hens, and to build a more compassionate world.

Cage-Free Indonesia is a movement initiated by Animal Friends Jogja

Cage Free Indonesia is a movement initiated by Animal Friends Jogja to raise public awareness about farm animal welfare—particularly that of egg-laying hens—in Indonesia through policy advocacy, farmer support, industry collaboration, and public education.

The term “cage-free” refers to a farming system that does not use battery cages, allowing hens to live more freely and express their natural behaviors, such as perching, walking, or stretching their wings.

The demand for eggs from cage-free systems continues to grow as national and international companies commit to using only cage-free eggs in their supply chains. However, the domestic availability of cage-free eggs still falls short of fully meeting that demand.

Policy & Regulation

Policy support from the government, including the Guidelines for Animal Welfare in Layer Hen Farming, is a crucial step in promoting the transition toward a more humane and animal-friendly farming system.

Education & Outreach

Animal Friends Jogja promotes systemic change by educating farmers, the public, and businesses about the importance of laying hen welfare, while introducing more ethical alternatives such as cage-free systems.

Global Direction: A World Without Battery Cages

Many countries around the world have abandoned the use of battery cages, as the practice is considered inconsistent with animal welfare principles. It’s time for Indonesia to follow this path for a more compassionate future.
